Doris Tate
ABERDEEN - Doris Haney Tate, 59, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at her home. She was born May 6, 1950, in Monroe County to the late James D. and Mavis Miller Haney. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, she married Jimmy D. Tate in 1967, and she was a homemaker. She enjoyed being with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, cooking, flower gardening, fishing and her dog “BB.” She was a member of Rocky Springs Baptist Church.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Robert Earl Fowlkes and Bro. Tommy Whaley officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Jimmy D. Tate of Aberdeen; two sons, Dwight Tate (Robin) of Hamilton and Chris Tate of Aberdeen; one brother, Eugene Haney of Amory; one sister, Judy Spencer (Keith) of Fulton; and three grandchildren, Justin Tate, Dillion Tate and Lane Tate.
She was preceded in death by her parents; father/mother-in-law, James Coley and Flora Tate; brother-in-law, James Tate; and one sister-in-law, Bobbye Haney.
Pallbearers were Dirk Lucas, Dennis Thompson, Danny Parham, Ken Griffin, Brad Brewer and Danny Worthey.
Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Little, Dillion Tate, Justin Tate, Lane Tate and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Nathanial Dawson III
BELMONT - Nathanial Cyrus Dawson III, 37, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at his residence. He was born Oct. 15, 1971, in Boise, Idaho, to Allen and Carol Christiansen Dawson. He was a police officer for 10 years.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Belmont with Bro. Wayne Mitchell officiating.
Survivors include his wife, April Dawson of Belmont; two children, Kayla Dawson and Austin Dawson of Belmont; his mother, Carl Jane Hawkins of Belmont; 10 brothers and sisters, Jerry Wayne Hawkins of Decatur, Ala., Vernon Keith Hawkins of Ridgeway, Ill., George V. Hawkins Jr. of Red Bay, Ala., Sheila Giddens of Tuscumbia, Ala., Debbie Skinner of Guntown, Vernita Hawkins of Saltillo, Tina Prichett of Shawneetown, Ill., Cari, Payne (Philip Vick) of Tremont and Christi Knight of Belmont; his grandmother, Wilma Young of Eatonville, Wash.; his father- and mother-in-law, Larry and Connie Manues Sr.; brother-in-law, Larry Manues Jr.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father and his stepfather, George Hawkins Sr.
Pallbearers were officers of the Belmont Police Department.
James Carlton Horton
GUNTOWN - James Carlton Horton, 90, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after an extended illness. He was a lifetime resident of the Unity community. He was born July 28, 1918, to Jesse and Vida Horton. He went to school at Unity and later served in the Army. He loved fishing, basketball, raising chickens and ducks and most of all, spending time with his granddaughters.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Green officiating. Burial was in Unity Cemetery.
Survivors include his granddaughters, Angie Taylor and Karen McVey and husband, Ian, and great-granddaughter, Katie McVey, all of Saltillo; a sister, Cleta Horton of Memphis; a son, Perry Horton of Guntown; his nieces, Peggy Wright (Jim) and Jean Beggs, all of Tupelo, Christine Kelley of Memphis, and Tammy Parham (Steve) of Guntown; his nephews, Gerald Horton (Carol) of Mooreville, James Howard Horton (Barbara) of Fulton, and Jackie Horton (Rita) of Saltillo; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Tyndall Horton; his parents; his brothers, Clasford Horton and Cyrus Horton; and a sister, Clytee Nanney.
Pallbearers were Ian McVey, Max Edwards, Jackie Horton, James Howard Horton, Gerald Horton and Jim Wright.

Iris Culver
SALTILLO – Iris Wicks Culver, 73, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at her residence in Saltillo. She was born Sep. 17, 1935, in Fox River, Wis., to Clayton and Agnes Sanderson Wicks. She was a native of Wisconsin, but had resided in Lee County for the past 80 years. She was a retired housekeeping employee and cook at nursing homes and restaurants and was a Baptist.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 18, at the Chapel of Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Nettleton with Rev. Dwain Ard officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Marla Walls (Zeke) of Russell Springs, Ky., Sandy Garcia of Plantersville and Peggy Culver of Tupelo; two sons, Butch Culver (Billie) of Shannon and Scott Culver of Mantachie; one sister, Arlene Froedge of Fla.; 21 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Quitman “Blue” Culver; her parents; one daughter, Lisa Wilson; and one granddaughter, Lisa Clark.
Pallbearers were David Yarbrough, Johnny Sullivan, Aaron Houdini, Anthony Culver, Jeff Pearson and Forrest Killough.
Jimmie Henson
SHANNON – Jimmie I. “Pawpaw Jim” Henson, 77, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at his residence in Shannon after a brief illness. A native of Hot Springs, Ark., he was born Nov. 8, 1931, to William Robert and Mary Matthews Henson. He was an employee at Aircap MTD for 42 years, retiring in 2000. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Doty Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher, a church trustee and the director of discipleship training.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 15, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Mike Smithey and Rev. Jim Manley officiating. Burial was in Doty Chapel Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Annie Lorene Henson of Shannon; two sons, John Henson of Tupelo and Stanley Stidham of Plantersville; three daughters, Mary Lindley (Charles) of Palmetto, Judy Flood of the home and Angie Smith (Steve) of Jackson, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren, John Henson II of Verona, Holly Dilberian (Brian) of Tupelo, Christa Henson of Southaven, Jason Stidham (Sherry) of Shannon, Justin Stidham (Kayla) of Pontocola, Dawn Cornelison (Brian) of Jackson, Tenn., Jeremie Smith ( Hannah) of Jackson, Tenn., Bridgett Smith of Kentucky, Colin Lindley (Jessica) of Germany, Erica Ratliff (Thomas) of Palmetto, Becky Adams (Aaron) and Madonna McClain of Fulton, Kathleen Christopher (Matt) and Beverly Jones (Tim) of Brewer, and Lindsey Miller (Cody), William “Scooter” Henson (Courtney), Jimmy John Henson (Brandi), and Stephen and Paul Spears, all of Nettleton; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Faith Kimble Salas; and one son, William Henson.

Ruby Emerson
FULTON – Ruby Clayton Emerson, 79, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Dogwood Plantation in Fulton. She was born Jan. 11, 1930, in Itawamba County to Fred and Vera Mae Smith Clayton. She was a factory worker and a member of Pine Grove Church of Christ.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 15, at Senter Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Johnny Emerson, Fred Clayton and Rubel Clayton officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Sue Emerson (Johnny) of Robertsdale, Ala.; one brother, Rubel Clayton (Patti) of Dunlap, Tenn.; her caregiver, Willard Chism of Fulton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Emerson.
Larry Joslin
THAXTON – John Larry Joslin, 65, died at his home. He enjoyed life in the country, raising cattle and fishing. He also enjoyed trips to Tunica to play the slot machines.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc with Bro. Steve Phillips and Bro. Justin Gates officiating. Burial was in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Oxford.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Houser (Ellis) of Horn Lake; two sisters, Peggy Moore (Will) of Red Banks and Ann Phillips (Donald) of Oxford; two brothers, Wayne Joslin (Willene) of Kirkville and Jimmy Joslin (Sheila) of Thaxton; one godson, Frank Gordon of Banner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Harmon Joslin; his parents, John Malone and Essie Clayton Joslin; and a brother, Travis Joslin.
Pallbearers were Troy Reid, Jimbo Joslin, Marty Gillespie, Frank Gordon, Greg Joslin, Jon Nic Phillips and Collin Phillips.
Gladys Higginbottom
BOONEVILLE – Gladys Alma Case Higginbottom, 77, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at her home. She was born Nov. 12, 1931, in Grassy, Ala., to Ben Fred Case Sr. and Dora Ann Hollander Case. She was a homemaker and a member of The House of Prayer. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, fishing and going to yard sales.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, in the Unity Broadcasting Auditorium with Bro. Michael Williams, Bro. Tim Dixon, Bro. Robert Chumley and Bro. David Baker officiating. Burial was in The House of Prayer Cemetery. Booneville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Dora Baker of Booneville; one sister, Jewel Owens of Booneville; one stepson, Ray Higginbottom of Fulton; three stepdaughters, Shelia Gentry (Jackie) of Fulton, Kaye Morphis (Tony) of Belmont and Donna Salter (Robert) of Florence, Ala.; two granddaughters, seven stepgranddaughters, five stepgrandsons, two great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Higginbottom, on April 22, 2008; her parents; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Rebecca Gentry; four brothers, Buford Case, Clendy Case, Cecil Case and Ben Case; a stepson, David Higginbottom; a stepdaughter, Betty Reeves; two nephews, Billy Wayne Lambert and Dual Don Case.
Pallbearers were Billy Franks, Jeff Davis, Steven Baker, Buddy Baker, Kelly Baker and Ken Case.
Anita Dunaway
GUNTOWN – Anita Russell Dunaway, 56, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at her residence after an extended illness. She attended the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church and she was a homemaker.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Henry Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Euclatubba Cemetery. Waters Funeral home of Baldwyn was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, James Dunaway of Guntown; her granddaughter, Madlynne Michelle Dunaway; son, Jeff Nichols of Fulton; sisters, Robbie Moses of Tupelo and Sue Davis (James) of Fulton; nieces and nephews, David Davis (Dianne), Janice Jenkins (Henry), Debbie Dozier, Sharon Russell, Charlotte Wiygul and Cindy Sheffield; and her mother-in-law, Rosie Dunaway of Baldwyn.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Michael Dunaway; her parents, Graland and Rosie Russell; brother, Bobby Wayne Russell; nephews, James Allen Davis and Jerry Moses; and her father-in-law, John E. Dunaway.
Pallbearers were Junior Dunaway, Tim Raines, Kenneth Raines, Mack George and Scotty Raines.
